Guest Post - What 12 Years Of Mold Illness Taught Me About Minerals And The Order Your Body Heals In

Note from Kyle: Thank you to Aubree Felderhoff for hosting me on her podcast and providing the following blog post.

For a long time I thought my body had simply betrayed me.

I was a national champion gymnast. I spent 14 years in elite fitness. I knew what a strong, capable body felt like from the inside. So when I started falling apart in my own home, slowly, symptom by symptom, none of it made sense. I was the healthy one. I was the one who knew how to take care of myself.

What I did not know yet was that I was living in mold. Twice, as it turned out, in two separate exposures across more than a decade. And what I really did not understand, the piece that took me the longest to learn, was that getting out of the mold was only the beginning. My body had been depleted in ways no one was measuring.

If you are part of Kyle's world, you already know where this is going. Because the conversation he is having about minerals is the exact conversation I needed someone to have with me years earlier.

Doctor after doctor, and still no answers

I saw more than 30 doctors over the course of my illness. I want you to sit with that number for a second, because I know some of you reading this are carrying your own version of it.

I had labs that came back "normal." I had symptoms that did not. Fatigue that sleep could not touch. Brain fog thick enough that I would lose words mid sentence. Anxiety that felt chemical, not circumstantial. Gut issues, hormone chaos, the kind of bone-deep exhaustion that makes you wonder if this is just who you are now.

Most of the help I was offered came in pieces. A supplement here. A medication there. A diet to try. And every piece was aimed at a symptom, never at the order things had broken down in. That was the missing thread. Nobody was asking what caused my health to collapse, and what the sequence was I needed to follow to get it back.

Mold does not just make you sick. It depletes you.

Here is what I wish someone had explained to me at the start.

Living in a water-damaged environment puts your body under a constant, invisible load. Your detox pathways run overtime. Inflammation stays switched on. Your stress response does not get to clock out. And all of that activity has a cost, paid in the raw materials your body runs on. Minerals are near the top of that bill.

When you are in survival mode for years, you burn through the very things that keep your energy, your nervous system, your thyroid, and your cellular repair running smoothly. By the time many people finally leave the moldy environment, they are not just dealing with the toxin. They are dealing with a body that has been quietly running on empty.

This is the part most mold recovery conversations skip right past. People focus, understandably, on binders and avoidance and getting out. All of that matters enormously. But if you rebuild the house without addressing the broken foundation, recovery stalls. You feel a little better, then you plateau, and you cannot figure out why.

The body heals in an order, not all at once

The single most important thing I learned across 12 years of illness and full recovery is this. The body heals in an order. It is not random, and it is not "throw everything at it and hope."

You cannot ask a depleted, dysregulated system to detox efficiently. You cannot expect a thyroid to behave when the minerals it depends on are not there. You cannot calm a frayed nervous system while the very things that stabilize it are running low. There is a sequence, and when you respect it, the body responds in a way that feels almost unfair after years of trying everything.

Understanding mineral status is one of the early, foundational steps in that sequence. It is hard to know where to begin rebuilding if you cannot see what is actually missing and what is sitting in the wrong place. That is exactly why the work Kyle does, looking at the mineral picture rather than guessing at it, matters so much for people coming out of chronic illness. You are not stabbing in the dark. You are reading the map.

I am not a mineral specialist, and I will always send people to the people who are. My lane is mold recovery. But I have watched, over and over, how getting the mineral foundation right changes everything that comes after it. The detox protocols work better. The energy actually returns and stays. The nervous system stops living in fight or flight. People stop feeling like a science experiment and start feeling like themselves.

You were never the problem

If there is one thing I hope you take from my story, it is this. Your body is not betraying you. It is responding, exactly as it was designed to, to a load it was never meant to carry, with a tank that kept getting drawn down faster than it could refill.

That reframe changed my entire life. It is the foundation my faith carried me back to, the belief that healing was not only possible but the way I was built. And it is the reason I do this work now, walking families all the way through recovery instead of leaving them stranded at the diagnosis.

You are not broken. You may simply be depleted, and out of order, and never shown the sequence. The good news is that both of those things can be fixed. I am proof. I have watched plenty of other people become proof too.

If you are standing at the start of that road right now, take heart. There is a path, it has steps, and you do not have to figure it out alone.
